please forgive me, I am new in networking. I just have one quick question: successful ping means NO networking problem?

Ping mean it works well enough to talk, you could still have duplex errors, for example, as they reduce throughput not connectivity I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

No, successful ping to localhost only means that your tcp/ip stack is installed. It doesn't mean that you even have an IP address assigned or that your stack can make calls out through the network card.

You can succesfully install a tcp/ip stack without a working network card.

Not really. Can you ping by computer name? You might try and ping someone like . A basic ping is just a means of saying "Are you there?". That doesn't mean the networked pc's will be able to talk to each other. What type of network? Are you running either DNS or WINS? If it's a small network, hosts and lmhosts files will help with the communication. There basic, but work well when set up right. (Simple text files really, just make sure the IP address' are correct.)
