subtotals in Excel

Dear all:

I have a huge table, and i would like to compute subtotals by year. this is my data.
1989 12 E 1605102025 1220 1 686 1839 0
1989 12 E 1605102025 1220 7 3810 22518 0
1989 12 E 1605104010 5880 30 20000 112504 0
1990 1 E 1605104005 1220 2 17690 196382 0
1990 1 E 1605104005 5800 27 17561 159782 0

I looked in the help provided by Excel, but did not go anywhere with it!
Could you tell me how to do it?
