In my report, the records are grouped by a formula value({LastName}+FirstName)(which is put in group header and group footer). Our user found the subtotal for some groups varied a lot in a short of period(according to our business, this is not reasonable). Any hint is really appreciated.
 
A bit more information would help here I think......

Without any more info, just a comment--if you are working with large numbers of people, there is the danger of grouping multiple people with the same name into one group, as if they are one individual. I usually group on {@namesort} which concatenates a uniqueID with first and last name. You can always change the groupname display to just the name in the group header.
