Substring a Global Variable

I am new to VB Active X and I am trying to sub-string a variable in a DTS package. For ex: I pass in a global variable with the value "Compaxx" I want to substring the "axx" and create a new variable named "cbldwconfig.axx" I am stuck if anyone can help please let me know.
