Hi Jack,
If you are using version 7.3 and above you will get bunch of built-in functions at your disposal. substr() function available too. I'm doubtful about instr() function.
I would direct you to a web link wherein you get more information about the built-in function available in different versions. Since it is a korian site, contents are mingled with korian & english. You will find source code for some useful functions in the form of stored procedures. I saw the instr() source amoung other functions.
