Hi, I am creating a database for our town Mechanic. I have a report with a couple of fields that are oriented vertically down the side of the page, this is the format that he wanted. The problem is, that on the report I have a couple of subreports, that depending on the number of records each contains, affects the spacing of the fields along the side of the page. My question is there a way of having the fields along the side of page remain unaffected by the size of the subreports on the page. I have tried changing the properties of the vertical fields so that they can shrink, but this has produced limited success. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Michael Kohler

Not sure I can picture exactly what oyu're trying to do here but you might be able to set up a shell report with no data. Inside the report header section place you original report and subreports, this time all as subreports of the shell. This way the vertical fields will remain unaffected by the contents of the other subreports.

As I said, I'm not sure what you're trying to get to here but this is a technique that works well for some complex single page reports that I have written. Best Regards,
Mike

Hi, thanks for the response. It is kind of difficult to explain what I want to do.

field u
a n
b i
c t

field 2 n
1 u
2 m
3 b

I hope this illustrates the problem, along the margin, there are a couple of fields, i.e. each car has a unit #, and this is how our mechanic does his filing, he wants to print this report and file it by this unit number.
The field and field 2 are representing the subforms. My problem is, that these subforms vary in the number of fields that they contain. So, in the example above, if field 2 has more than one field, the "numb" ends up down the page, and sometimes runs onto the next page.
I hope this helps, if not perhaps I can send you a copy of my database.
Thank you, Michael Kohler

I think you should be able to do what I suggested above.
If you have an example layout it would be easier. Could you mail me a rtf or pdf copy? If so, send to:

Why not just print it landscape and have the subreports under the Unit Number field. They can be as long as they need to be

Hey mdthornton , just wanted to thank you again for your suggestion, it is working out great.
Thank you,
