subreport linking of differently named fields

I'm trying to link a field in the subreport called "udf1" to a field in the container report called "item number". I can't seem to get it to do this.

On the subreport links I marked the item_number as the field to link to (since this is what I want in the container report), but it wouldn't let me then select data in the subreport based on the udf1 matching the item number. Also, in the database, item number type is number, udf1 type is string. Not sure if that makes a difference.

CR 11 pro, using odbc drivers to an Interbase database.

The linking fields must be of the same datatype, so converting the string to a number:

val(udf1)

Then use the formula to link to the corresponding field.
