subreport and growing columns, HELP!

I have a subreport embedded into a main report. The subreport simply prints out a bunch of dates in a single column, but since I have my 'subreport options' set to 'grow' that single column fills up the main report area when there are multiple items in that column. So I went into the subreport, Format Section, details and specified columns, 'down then accross'. But it continues to remain in a single column, it will not span into 2 or 3 columns like I need. Any suggestions?
