Hello,

I have a network that was originally built using the addressing scheme:
192.168.1.x
255.255.255.0

Unfortunately, seven years later, we are fast approaching the limit of 254 devices on this particular network.

I've got two questions - First, is there any easy way of adding more devices on the network without going to each and every machine and changing the IP addressing scheme?

Second, what would happen if I simply changed the subnet on all my machines to 255.255.0.0? Since addresses in the 192 range are considered class C addresses, what would happen if I gave it a class B subnet? Would my head 'asplode?

Thanks,
Chris

You would still have to change the netmask on all the machines
so they could communicate. I think there is a term for what you are doing but I cant think of it.

Gb0mb

........99.9% User Error........

You could probably put together a VBS which would remotely change the subnet mask - that way you wouldn't have to alter the IP range, as Gb0mb implied...

Have a look at...
...and see if it helps.

I also think there is a term for what you are doing, involving words like "incredibly difficult" and "unmanageable"... :)

Using DHCP would be an awful lot easier, particularly with 200+ stations on your network!
