Hi. I am a bit confused about the behaviour of my subnetwork. I have windows 2003 server set up with DHCP, Active Directory, and DNS all on the same router. 3 XP clients are connected via Internet Connection Sharing.
The odd thing i am experiencing here is that every now and then ping works just find from the clients to the server and visa versa and every now and then i get "request timed out" and most often a mix of a response and "request timed out". My DHCP server is on and authorized and the DNS server
is up. Any suggestions on how i can get a healthy subnet going? Thanks in advance. Ipconfig/all below:

Some more information on my network problem... today, when i loged on my clients get no ping response from the server.
Here are some suggestions i have received that didn't work:

1) I have unchecked all "client for microsoft networks"
boxes in the profiles of TCP/IP.

2) I have the DNS forwarding address in my router pointing
to my ISP's DNS server.

3) I have reverse lookup fully configured (to the best of
my knowledge).

4) A DNS Zone is configured for the private network.

5) A Static IP Address is assigned for the gateway's private NIC and the DHCP server is issuing for the clients on the network.

6) ICS is configured, Routing And Remote Access is not

7) I am using a hub with all clients communicating with the gateway through it - the gateway is directly connected to my cable modem.

8) I have reinstalled the driver for my private NIC on the gateway - it is up and working but reads 10Mbs vs. before when it was at 100 Mbs - but seems quite healthy.

again, suggestions much appreciated. thanks in advance.

Start by repairing your Winsock service stacks: see faq779-4625

thanks bcastner. I actually tried that before and get the information "registry import information not found" before it attempts a release and renew. do you think this has something to do with the problem? Thanks agian.

When the system fails to ping, run nbtstat -c and see whether the name/ip are in the cache and correct. Will tell you whether the dns lookup is working/has worked.

Also arp -a will tell you if the system still knows the MAC address.

I'd also run IpConfig /Renew on the client, then retry the ping to see if that makes any difference.

Teaching you to suck eggs - you have installed the latest service packs I presume.

Let us know what the outcome/output from any of the above are ... might help us help you
