We have an Ip range divided into two vlans - we access the top one as (example) 8.8.25.129 - 255, with 8.8.25.128 as the gateway and 255 as the broadcast. When entering and address we use the IP (example 8.8.25.212), the mask (255.255.255.128) and the gateway (8.8.25.129). What do we use for gateway and netmask for the first part of the vlan - 8.8.25.1 - 8.8.25.128? we were told 8.8.25.0 and that 8.8.25.1 was the vlan interface and 8.8.25.128 was the broadcast...

You have some things messed up it seems:

8.8.25.128 is the gateway for the 2nd vlan but it is also the
broadcast for the first vlan?

I suspect it is:

8.8.25.128 network address
8.8.25.255 broadcast
8.8.25.129 gateway
255.255.255.128 subnet mask

8.8.25.0 network address
8.8.25.127 broadcast
8.8.25.1? gateway(this is the ip address of whatever is your gateway, maybe the device doing the vlan routing?)
255.255.255.128 subnet mask
