Subinterfaces on the Cisco 3660

Can you create sub interfaces within a Ethernet port not a fast Ethernet port.

I am trying to set up a vlan and use dhcp on the 3660 using one of the available Ethernet ports when creating the sub interface I am unable to ping the switch but if I give the interface itself an ip address I can ping the switch.
