Friends,

I have control over a subdomain and its DNS record:

xyz.pdq.abc.rst.com

"rst.com" is owned by our parent organization, and it would be utterly unthinkable for me to contact them for DNS issues.

Can I establish an MX record for this sub.sub.sub-domain?

I am looking at RFC 1035, but not making much ground, I am afraid.

Best, NY

I've never done it, but I don't see a reason why this wouldn't be okay. I have a friend who has an email address which is name@sub.sub.gov.uk and that works fine.

If you are authoratative for this domain then you can create MX records for it.

Chris.

Thanks guys...

I have control over the subdomain, not the domain. Doesn't the subdomain MX record have to go in the zonefile for the DOMAIN, just like a CNAME entry?

Thanks.

No. If you are authoratative for the sub-domain then MX records can go there.

That sounds like what I want to hear.

Guess I will have to eat some crow for sending out an email where I talked about getting in contact with the adminstrators of the domain etc etc.

Hee.

Thanks Chris, will let you know how it turns out.

Merry Christmas!!
