In a normal document, if you are on a bullet (other than the first) and press the TAB key, it gives you a sub-bullet. In a table, TAB moves you to the next cell in the table.

Is there any keystroke that will perform this sub-bullet functionality inside a table?

Hi jsolutions,

I hadn't realised that Tab had that effect outside tables, but then I normally try to use proper styles (honest, I do, Gerry [smile]) rather than just create lists like that.

The Command being generated is ListIndent and it doesn't have a 'proper' shortcut key. The only way I can think to do it in a Table is to assign a key to the command.

Select Tools > Customize from the Menu
Click on Keyboard
Under Categories, select Format
Under Commands, scroll down and select ListIndent
Click in the Press new shortcut key textbox
Press your choice of key combination
Click on Assign, then Close and Close again, to finish.

Then use your new hotkey inside or outside a table.

Enjoy,
Tony

I did not want to go into my Style rant.......but now that you mention it.....

The proper way to handle this is to create a List Style. While Paragraph styles and Character styles have been around for a long time, I am not sure when List Styles came in.

In any case, you do not state version, but you may be able to create a List Style, which is the way to go and settles the issue nicely.

Many thanks to you both. Sorry for leaving out the version - It is Word 2003.

Gerry - don't know if you've tested CTRL-TAB in 2003, but it did not seem to work for me. Left the bullet in place and put a tab after the bullet.

Tony - the ListIndent was the trick. For the document that I am using (a corporate standard), the indent that is used with ListIndent is a little more than the corporate standard (unfortunately, i am in no role that could affect that decision). For now, I am using the ruler to manually move the bullet. Is there a way to configure the ListIndent to a specific indention size??

This has already saved me a ton of time, but if it is possible to configure list indent as I mentioned, it would nail the problem completely.

Many thanks for the advice.

Jay

Hi Jay,

Gerry knows more than I do about this but a List Style sounds like exactly what you want (I think they came in with XP but they certainly exist in 2K3). I'm not even sure you can do it (globally) any other way.

And you should be able to set up hotkeys and/or toolbar buttons to switch in and out of styles as you go (or work with styles in the Task Pane).

Enjoy,
Tony
