I'm working on a large pagemaker document created by someone else (long since gone) which has lots of styles listed which are no longer needed. But when I try to remove them from the list I get a message saying that it's not possible due to 'bad record index'. Anyone know what this means?
Thanks

Carol: at least select in the preferences, bottom right,
"Save smaller" instead of "Save faster" .
Otherwise the history of all previous sessions is still
included in the file. -----Gernot

The message 'bad record index' has to do with the way the file was saved the last time. It can mean a lot of things. it could be a hard disk or a disk error. When you are writing to a disk with an error on it. This means that although the file has been saved the is damaged. This can be due also to the loss of magnetism of the disk it was saved on.
You can try to open a copy of the file instead of the original. and start from there on.
If this doesn't work, the best thing in my opinion is: start a new pagemaker document. Export all the text files to a text format. Take note of the descriptions in the styles you wan't to use in your new layout. Then redefine the styles in the new document and start to make a new layout.

Thanks very much grillhouse. I'll give your suggestion a try.

I had this error the other day and was able to repair my document by doing the following: create copy of document by saving w/diff name, go to master page and click on pointer tool, press Shift + Option (Ctrl for pc) and at same time, click on Type and select Hyphenation. This will perform a diagnostic recompose. You should hear a beep confirming the errors where fixed. If your error was due to lost links, you can now go to the links manager and replace/update links.
