Style sheets lose my text 1

Just installed brand new CS3 Premium (on G4 running Tiger 4.11), so I'm groping around while trying to lay out a 36pp mag in a hurry.
Whenever I apply para styles to text, the text vanishes, leaving the 'text overload' box full. What is dumping my text? Why? It must be something to do with styles, but I can't see what.
Also, the same happens when I place text from a Word file – everything vanishes from the InDesign text box. Help!
