Style on image map 1

Is there a way to make an imagemap area lighten, or darken, or in some way become more visible when the mouse is over it?

you cant target certain areas of an image but you can slice up the image and make them rollovers

sometime you just gotta say "WHAT THE @#*% !!"
 

that makes sense... It doesn't fit in with the rest of my scenario though. This is a map for a property management company to use for selecting an area... thus the image map. The areas will continue to change so I don't want to have to keep making a different set of images with rollovers.

I'll come up with something...

You make a single lighter (or darker) version of your whole image, and the Javascript cuts out the right bits to use as rollovers on the fly.
