Ok .. Another silly question ..
what is an upgrade tool ? My upgrades usually involved swapping software cartridges and re-programming.. (Good ol fashioned way) Just recently got NRU and RAD's going so i'm somewhat familiar with that..

so when i'm being told i'm upgrading system software (On a CICS i believe) and they have backed up programming and have an upgrade tool .. what does that mean ?

:) thanks again for all your help with these silly questions that I should probably know the answer to.

upgrade tool is just that ...used for upgrading from one version/level of software to another

for certain others you just swap the cartridges as you were used to.

if you have the installers guide, refer to section on upgrading. that details when to do what !!

But is it software that u use to upgrade the system ? or just a fancy term to say "new software cartridge" .. ??

:)

the software is always in addition to the upgrade tool ...

the upgrade tools helps u retain some/most/all of the programming done

So I will get an "upgrade tool" cd or something.. and I will connect the RAD.. and things will start explaining themselves from there ??

(I'm assuming everything will explaing itself when I see what I'm given .. But i'm just trying to prep a little in advance for this)

upgrade tool is for MICS not CICS. It is a reusable flash card that is inserted into the NVRAM cartridge. It loads the database from the system to the NVRAM cart. Once the load is complete the tool flash card is removed and the regular software flash card is installed. Its used to upgrade MICS systems (R1T1, 1.0, 2.0?) which did not have fLash software cards. If you're upgrading a system that already has a flash card NVRAM not tool is required. No tool required for CICS either.

Ah ok this makes sense .. (and you're right it is a MICS) ..

Thanks everyone !! You guys are the greatest ! :)

FYI... Make sure that if you are going to add ANY Keycodes taht you do the upgrade first then get the System ID. Because I have found out that the upgrade tool can change the ID.

I think the programming isn't moved to the NVRAM cart; it's reorganized in a format that the new software will be able to understand and easily upgraded.

It works nice. I did it to upgrade a R1T1 to v4.1 on a MICS.

On CICS the programming should stay in if you upgrade. But if you downgrade, you loose everything. (the easy way to zap a password/programming if you don't have a RAD handy)
