Hi,

I want to make some short indy films and I'm trying to decide what software to buy.

I want to make both films and short animations.

Is Flash MX both functional enough to deliver a quality product expediently, and easy enough to learn for a beginner? Is it worth the $400?

You can defanly make short animations...but films - need more info <
>cartoon films or using camcorder?
>It is easy to make animations if you are beginner
>Quite hard to animate good pictures - i.e. in cartoons
>Would thake a very long time to make 10 mintue flim
>took me 40mins to make this

(You have to enter that adderss in the Address bar, it doesn't work if you just click on it)

Let me note that experienced Flash developers can get pretty quick as simple animations, but it's still not a super-fast animation tool -- it's really designed with interactivity in mind. Still, there are some very rich animations out there that have been done in Flash. Perhaps contacting some of their creators will give you a sense of how well it works:

(I am not affiliated with this site -- it's just a good source for complex Flash animations.)

Yes...i am not the fastest...but i was using a quite old Laptop with no mouse; using the touch pad.

Thanks for the input.

I would like to make cartoons like Mark Foire's and I thought he made them with Flash MX.

I also wanted to make short (10 to 30 min) movies and I thought Flash could do that, too.

Plus, I wanted to spruce up my website with better graphis.

I was hoping Flash MX was the tool, but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks again,

concerning the website-graphics flash for sure is a suitable tool.
for animated films i'd rather try to get into "cinema4d" or "maya" which as far as i know are usually used to make animated films (i heard that ice-age was done in one of those but i guess also more easy films can be done there :) )
anyway in my view films longer than 2-3 minutes will result in very low effectivity in flash.
as mentioned before interactivity is flash's thing rather than complex animation like in real films.

Mark Fiore does use Flash for his animated political cartoons.

Flash can be used to make longer animated films as well -- there are dozens of examples at the link I provided above.

Here are 10 additional short episodes of The Critic created with Flash:

The first few are quite funny, and all of them show some of the really great animation you can do in Flash.

On your comment about making your site cooler, Flash is ideal for this.

i do not doubt animated films can be done in flash, i just ment that it is probably not the ideal way since the possibilities of usage are pretty limited, tweens are often rather hard to use, frame by frame animation necessary in some cases,... (even if some hyper-dooper-checkers are able to handle it - and obviously have glowing adorers :))
but it won't be easy anyway...

why don't you just download a trial-version of flash? fully usable for 30 days, try it yourself, trust your own judgement ;-), sometimes that's worth more than our experiences; i guess rather few people here (me included) have intensively worked on animated films in flash...

so:

Again, all great input.

I've been looking around for movie-editing software. There's some pretty affordable stuff out there: $50 to $100.

My Sony came with "Movie Shaker" which is neat for home movies, but it doesn't let you zoom an image and a few other things that I'm fairly sure Flash MX can do.

Thanks for the time.

I'm an Atom Films fan from way back. Radiskull, Micro Gerbil. Foire usually has some good stuff.

Thanks again for the input.

hey all....
I have used the Vegas Video by sonic foundry, its about the best i have seen for the price...although that varies....
if you want to do transitions and all that funky stuff, this is your program for indy....
check it out anyway, i give it 9/10
kiks butt on adobe premiere, and easy to use....
as far as flash, i use flash to design nametags and splash screen animations for avi but the actual video editing would be quite difficult.
cheers paul

I checked out that Vegas Video. Never heard of it before, but it looks pretty good.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll still buy Flash for website stuff, but movies will need more firepower.
