I just got hired and am having an awful time with Windows XP compatibility issues.

The Autodesk site says compatibility is only tested on their latest version, but I think they do that on purpose to force people to buy their latest version.

We have AutoCAD Map 2000i (which we never use, because our guy still insists on using release 13), but now we are forced to upgrade in order to be compatible with Windows XP.

HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS:

1) Has anyone out there tried AutoCAD Map 2000i with Windows XP? Does it work?

2) What is the difference between AutoCAD 2000i and AutoCAD Map 2000i (ie: did we buy the wrong software?)

3) Can we upgrade from a MAP version to a regular version of AutoCAD?

4) I want to train myself in AutoCAD Map, is this the same type of training for AutoCAD?

I see from the Autodesk site that version 2000i is not officially supported on XP. I believe MAP is built on the same version of AutoCAD (i.e. 2000i on 2000i, 2002 on 2002, etc...) MAP probably just has enhanced commands for Civil work and creates new objects for civil. All versions of ACAD 2000 and newer(i.e. MAP, Mechanical, etc..) can read files from ACAD 2000 and beyond. It will just call anything that it does not recognize a Proxy object. You will have to ask your reseller about upgrading and I would guess that if your learn AutoCAD, you will learn about 75% of what you need to know to use MAP. Good luck.

The first response to this question is very accurate. The only item that I am adding is that Map has commands that will allow you to open .DGN files from MicroStation.

Also You can import GIS files from MapInfo .MIF and ArcView Shape .SHP (civil engineering)

There are some other very nice features for working with databases that are better with Map than 2000i. Just be glad that you didn't get Acad2002. At least 2000i has most of the bugs exterminated.
