spent over 12 hours bashing at this ... NS2k2 install claims there is a memory virus on this machine and will not reinstall ... AVG and the Norton emergency CD show up nothing ... I removed all the Norton products cleaned the registry, (removed all symantec and norton entries), reinstalled 98SE (not a clean install) no change ... NU2k2 Win Doctor was claiming another program is locking critical registry entries in system.dat but doesn't give any additional info ... I also ran the latest worm virus cleaner from Symantec and it claims there was nothing found

I have searched Norton's site as well as MS ... nothing seems to describe this situation.

Does anyone have an idea? (other then a clean install)

I have also removed all third party installs like tweakui, Qwicktime, etc still no luck

There are no unusual progs running in the systray ... although I shut everything down except explorer with again no effect

using msconfig I stopped all the startup services and this still didn't clear the problem ...

If this is a virus it sure doesn't appear to be doing anything else ... I have two other machines networked and these appear to be fine.

hey
if it's a reg files that is left from something previous it may just be a "dead end".
if you've done everything else, try advanved administrative tools you can get it at it has a reg cleaner. try running the reg cleaner, anything that comes up INVALID ENTRY (at the bottom of the page), remove it.
it may just be a file left over from another program and not really a virus at all.

there is some real nasty viruses around at the moment, might I suggest you build a rescue disk set from your norton anti virus use these disks to check for viruses in dos. I have had similar instances and this method has saved my bacon a few times.

G-Lock found a few invalid entries but still no joy ... Norton scan took over 5 hours and found nothing ... I did an F8 and disabled all startup drivers again no joy ...
Found one of the system files setupx??? not valid restored from 98se cd still nothing ... at this point I think I will try another copy of NS2k2 failing that I think its time for clean install argggg

Well Holmes! When you eliminate everything the only thing thats left must be the problem! ... My Norton CD has a problem! ... Tried another CD and away it went ....
