I am a information system technician at the moment but wanting to change positons within my company to telecommunications (phone systems, and cable running) I was wodering what is the best certification to be had in that area I was looking at the CCNT but im not sure and also I would like to find some books that are up to date about cabeling for data, voice, televesion, and VOIP. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A CCNA or CCNT certification would be helpful, but if you only have one choice, the BICSI cert would serve you better as DHNL listed above.

I would also search the some tutorials on VOIP, and basic telecommunications fundamentals. There are some good resources out there to provide a basic knowledge to build upon.

No certification will replace a thirst for knowledge, a drive for excellence, and attention to detail. If you possess these attributes, the rest will be easy. I would hire someone with these three qualifications over someone certified on my phone switch, but who is lazy and sloppy.

bicsi is a great source to the industry and their classes, and books are well worth the price. But even books cannot duplicate real world experience, especially when it comes to cabling. One thing you may consider, next time you have a cabling vendor in house, or at a peers location, ask to tag along so can watch the little tips and tricks that most seasoned good cabling contractors know.
For nortel related training for phone systems, globalknowledge.com is probably your best bet. Also for some good insight to Nortel site, try ghtrout.com alot of good tutorials there as well.

I would concentrate my efforts more towards the Telephone system than the cabling side. As I have a cabling crew and take care of a fairly large PBX, I would say the PBX is a lot more complicated than the cabling side. Not taking anything away from the cabling side here guys, as one is as important as the other.
Even more so now with POE, and VoIP.

I would look towards the vendors website for training or find the system here on TT and read, read, and read some more. While the installation practices will slightly vary from one category cabling to the next, the PBX side is changing daily. The traditional processors are now gone and the move towards VoIP is running ramped. All the processors are now servers, which in itself is a major challenge to say the least. Now their are firmware, software and hardware changes all the time.

If you will post your system type I will try to help. And for more about cabling. Well you are already at the best place to learn about that. Read through the different post here on TT cabling and learn. These guys here are willing and happy to teach..

Hell, there are no rules here - we're trying to accomplish something.

If you want to mess around with a PBX simulator (Nortel PBX), go to ghtrout.com and check out the orelay simulator. That shows you a little bit of command line interface on the Nortel PBX. Also ha some great tips and practices. There is much to learn in this field, but it is a fun field to work in. I also have to agree that the money is in the programming, not the cabling. I speak from experience!
