what do I need to put in the .profile (ksh)
to replace the need to type in stty erase <backspace>
after logging in?

HI,

vi .profile . Then type in stty erase ^H. Save and exit with :wq. Relogin.

P/S : ^ and H is separate key on your keyboard.

regards,
feroz

be sure to put an interactive-shell test around stty commands when in .profile

(the syntax escapes me at the moment)

I find it's better to change your terminal or terminal emulator if you can. I'm using Reflections from a PC and I changed the mapping so hitting the backspace sends a Delete instead of a Backspace. This lets me use the Backspace key if I mistype username or password while logging in (pre .profile). Plus I don't need the [tt]stty[/tt] to change the erase character in my .profile.

In Reflections it's at Setup->Terminal->Keyboard. Then just select Delete and OK.
