Stroke Cap and Transparency

my image is made of thousands of lines not paths. When using transparency and stroke cap round I get the inevitable round circles appearing everywhere due to the overlap.

Is there a way round this? Is it easy to convert such an object to paths for instance?

There is a way around this.

Setup your lines the way you have them segmented in the png but don't set transparency. Select all and Object>Path>Outline Stroke. With everything selected go to Pathfinder>Merge. Select all and set your transparency.

I don't have Illustrator running yet today, but you should be able to group the paths and drag the transparency setting to the group level in the appearance palette. I'll get back to you with more detail once I get the babe fired up.

Remove the appearance from the paths. You can either reduce to basic appearance in the appearance palette, or set the opacity to normal, 100% in the transparency palette.

Next, select all paths and group them, then apply the transparency settings to the group. The result should look like this:
