Stretchy Table cells

This might sound bizzare but I'll try and explain as best I can. I have a table with images as bg to the cells, the ones on the bottom rows can just repeat as the table contents stretch the table down, but the images on the top rows aren't repeating patterns so look stupid if those cells are stretched.

When I add more content to the main cell, the cells on the left stretch but the top ones and not the bottom ones. I've put H vals into the cells to try and stop this but to no joy.

Any ideas where I might be going wrong?

First, with CSS you can simply tell which backgrounds you want repeated (and also along which axis) and which you don't. So, employing that might solve your problems altogether.

As for the table problems, it is very hard to maintain a uniform cross-browser effect when it comes to stretching certain cells in a complex table. Most browsers will take into account the given width and height values, however, there are always those that will interpret things their own way.

Out of curiousity, what is an H val?
