Can someone help me speed up my Linux machine? I am using P3, 450Mhz, 192Mb ram. My WinME installation works really fast. But Linux Runs slow. I want to use it as a desktop. So i selected the desktop or workstation isntallation(dont remember really).
I want to remove useless applications and services. Can some one help me with this?

You need to disable many of the unused services on your machine. You can do it by going to System Settings, Server Settings, Service Management (Services). You can start or stop individual services manually, and check or uncheck the automatic service start.

You probably want:

apmd
atd
crond
cups
gpm
ipchains
iptables (really on need either ipchains or iptables generally)
keytable
kudzu
netfs
network
random
rawdevices
rhnsd
sendmail
sgi_fam
syslog
xinetd (if you want to run inet services)

You can turn on any other services that you might need, but I think that this is pretty minimal.

Comments anyone?

rhnsd certainly isn't necessary.

What would probably speed up your machine quite a bit would be to change your desktop environment. XFCE is probably the most newbie-friendly, yet light-weight window manager I've seen:

I found that I didn't need sendmail at all running an Rh9 linux desktop. If you are just using a 'normal' configuration with just a mail client (Mozilla etc) then you don't need an MTA installed at all.

I you wanted to do something like having the mail come to your machine (ie acting as a server) and then your mail client reading it from there then you would need an MTA.

I found that Rh9 starts up about 1 to 2 mins faster now without sendmail loading. Yaaay!
