Streaming Media plays jerkily - unless I have Task Manager Open...?!

OK, VERY strange thing going on here:

If I stream a video, it plays jerkily (freezing for 1/2 a second then continuing etc.). BUT, if I open Task Manager, keeping the video in the background, it plays perfectly.

I've done a virus/adware/spyware scan, and Windows gives top priority to Programs rather than background services (according to System Properties).

Any ideas?

I am having the same problem and it does not matter which app I use - Media Player 10, Nero NetShow, WinDVD, etc., they ALL do it.
This did not start until I downloaded a plethora of codecs so I could play movies I had downloaded. Now I am fearful to uninstall them.
If you find an answer, please share it. I will do likewise.

Haven't found an answer yet, but it's nice to know I'm not alone with this problem :)

have you tried dropping the priority?

Also DWalrus, why are you afraid of uninstalling the codecs? The first logical step is to remove the item that was the last thing added before the problem began.

windows is quirky.

If it is playing jerkily in an environment where it is supposed to have higher priority, but playing fine in an environment where it is supposed to have lower priority..

it's just a test.

So if the Task Manager is open, it gives lower priority to other programs?

Windows Media Player 10 plays in "Normal Mode" by default for me.

DragonQ0105, there is a way to disable or change the priority of each audio codec that is loaded in windows XP.
do you still have the problem ?
