This problem is affecting so much I am not even sure where to post the issue but here goes:

On several PC's we are using a shared printer from a network server. When this printer is set to the default and MSWord is opened it hangs and the machine becomes unresponsive. I have noticed the system event log is full of the following warning:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Print
Event Category: None
Event ID: 20
Date: 1/31/2006
Time: 10:29:27 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: PHOENIX
Description:
Printer Driver HP Color LaserJet 4600 PCL 6 for Windows NT x86 Version-3 was added or updated. Files:- HPBF422G.DLL, HPBF422E.DLL, HPBF422I.PMD, HPBF422E.HLP, hpnra.exe, hpboid.exe, hpbpro.exe, hpbnrac2.dll, hpbmiapi.dll, hpboidps.dll, hpbprops.dll, hpjipx1u.dll, hppapts0.dll, hppasnm0.dll, hppapml0.dll, hpzipm12.exe, hpzipt12.dll, hpzinw12.exe, hpzipr12.dll, hpzisn12.dll, hpbf422i.HPI, hpbafd32.dll, hpbftm32.dll, HPLJ4600.cfg, hpcdmc32.dll, hpbcfgre.dll, hpbmmon.dll, hpdomon.dll, hpbhealr.dll, hpjcmn2u.dll, hpbmini.dll.

This is coming up every 30 seconds or so. I have deleted the printer and reinstalled. If the printer is deleted everyting is fine. I have contacted HP for the latest driver (Their website was down today do I could not just download the driver). When I reinstalled the printer with the new driver I got a similar message but it had different driver files listed in the event. Then the same event listed above began again. This happens on windows 2000 professional laptops connected to the network. So far there are three people complaining about this issue with the same printer but no one else yet. I have run virus scans on the machines and found nothing.

Any suggestions?

TCouch - Great article.

teqmod - Of the various techniques that article discusses, I would go for flushing unused drivers first. There's also an excellent point about another print server having a different printer of the same model on the problem pc.

This was the only print server in use. I have added a second to get around the issue with the problem server temporarily.

I will try flushing the drivers next.

thanks
