I have a radion 9600 series graphic card. I don't know if this is a problem or this will happen anyway. Anywho, Whenever I use the scroll wheel on the mouse it makes a strange whistling noise. I have identified that is't not monitor or the speeker that's causing the problem (turning off, and unplugging). Also when I render an image in Blender ( it makes the whistling while the image is rendering.

Can anybody tell me if there is a problem with graphics card, or otherwise, and how I could fix it.

Try a different mouse. Next substitute the video card. Have you tried unplugging the case speaker and amplified speakers both? Since it also happens under video stress, check your DX settings. I've seen this before and it was a bear!

Since you've ruled out the speaker and monitor, then my next guess is the hard drive.

Does the whistling sound only occur when doing the two things you described? Does it happen during bootup at all?

The best method at this point is probably to take off the side of the case and listen closely.

If you can find a small bore tube (a straw is too small) to hold to your ear it makes it far quicker to identify where the sound is coming from. Those kind of high whining noises are notoriously difficult to pinpoint as you're never quite sure if you're hearing it correctly especially inside a case with reflections going on everywhere. :)

I have the exact same problem with an ASUS 9600 XT. It's definately coming from the graphic card. The problem can been heard while scrolling, either with the mouse wheel or using the slider bar. It's also evident when running different graphics demos, etc. It doesn't appear to be related to the driver.

Did it always make that sound, or did it just start recently?

It would also be a good idea to email or call Asus's tech support to report the problem in the meantime.

It's a brand new card. I had tried a friends ATI manufactured 9600 XT card before I decided to purchase this one. I'm sure the ASUS people will think I'm crazy when I describe the issue. It just doesn't seem right that a video card should do this. I'll probably end up sending it back and eating the restock fee.

Just thought I would confirm this issue.

It may sound strange to ASUS, but you can easily back your explanation with the fact that another video card in your system did not have this problem (and that you know it's the video card making the noise). Also, it is obvious that another person with that same card is experiencing the same issue. Depending on the vendor where you purchased the card, they may still allow you to exchange it for a new card if it wasn't that long ago when you made the purchase. Try them first.

Otherwise, the card itself should still be under warranty. In that case, take it up directly with ASUS. Pay the restocking fee as a last resort!

Capasitors that are slightly split at the top make a whistling noise as well.
