Hi,

My system started doing a strange thing a couple of weeks ago. When I turn it on, the screen remains blank. The fans start; however, there are no beeps from BIOS to indicate any specific problems. (The PC speaker isn't broken.) The reset button has no effect. I must turn the power off, then back on---then I can boot normally.

Any idea what this could be? I have an Abit KA7 m/b and Athlon 700 MHz (don't laugh). Any other specs on request. Thanks!

Usually the power supply getting slow in its old age.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

Reseat and clean the area around the processor of dust, make sure heat sink is on nice. Could be PS also.

Friend of mine had this problem. he replaced everything except the monitor, and guess what - it was the monitor that was not coming out of hibernation properly.

Clean and re-seat the memory stick and (if all else fails), remove and reinsert the CPU. If you do the last, make sure you have more heat sink compound handy.

Usually the only time you get a no post situation like that is when there is a problem with the CPU. Moonspell may be correct if the hard drive appears to be loading Windows. Memory issue or most often in the case of a failing PS will cause a post error code. Or you'd notice lockup and operating issues with a failing PS.

I have seen this before on an AMD system and it was a combo-syndrome.The ps started failing, burning out a section of the main board, this ps eventually went nuclear and burned out dramatically.Do check for loose connections on the main board.
