I have a server that I want to change from a Domain back to a Workgroup.

The Server has some software on it that don't really have to be on a Domain, someone just set it up as a Domain.

If I set the server back to a Workgroup, what should I expect from the workstations that are already a member of the domain?

Just my $.02.

Is is this server a DC, and if it is, is it the only DC?

Yes, it is on both counts.

This is a small business with only about 7 workstations. I don't know why they were ever set up on a Domain anyway.

What I'm trying to get around is having to have them upgrade 2 of their computers from Home flavors to Professional flavors.

I think that I may be better off doing just that though. It would probably be easier to just upgrade the 2 workstations to join the Domain instead of trying to take the other 5 workstations off.

I would upgrade the 2 XP home workstations. Easier and better to leave the domain intact. Domains give you central management of users and passwords, workgroups mean you have to manage these on each machine. There are many reasons to keep the domain, keep the domain.

I agree. Domains are much easier to manage than workgroups, IMHO. Upgrading the two workstations is fairly straight forward.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

I think I will just upgrade the 2 workstations. I was going to try to save them a buck by not having to upgrade, but it would probably be easier and much less of a headache.

If I get the OEM version of XP Pro from Amazon, can I install it? I was thinking that you had to buy hardware to get the OEM version.
