Strange problem with Office 2000 help

I recently had cause to look something up in the help files for Outlook 2000, and did a search for the topic in question (which was "backup" incidentally) - and when it found the relevant topics and went to display one, it tried to establish a connection to the Internet. I then found that when I tried looking at various help topics in any Office app, they too tried to establish an Internet connection.

However if I repeatedly press cancel on the DUN box to deny a connection, eventually the help topic i requested is displayed.

For me this is udesirable behaviour since I cannot afford to have an open Internet connection every time I wish to use help.

I therefore wondered if any one else has come across this behaviour and if so is there any way to disable it? Alternatively should I just remove and reinstall my copy of Office, or is it some feature installed in the software intentionally as a device for Microsoft to spy on people?

Hoping someone can shed some light on the peculiar behaviour.

Many thanks

Stuart

When you installed Office 2000 did you do a full install to the Hard Drive or did you do a custome install and installed only the components you wanted. This sounds like not ALL the Office 2000 help files were installed and it tries to go to the Web to "ATTEMPT" to supplement for what its lacking. If you put the Office 2000 CD in the drive and choose repair and Install ALL to your Hard Drive you will fix this problem. Then a gain I may be wrong. This is just what it sounds like to me. Thanks James. I had already tried to repair the Office 2000 installation using the method you suggest before I wrote my post, and this did not solve the problem. I did have a look just now and according to Setup, the Outlook 2000 help is set to run from my computer.

Another thing that makes me think that the files are fully installed (i.e. it does not need to supplement from the web) is because if I hold down the Esc key to prevent a connection being made, Office displays the topic I requested anyway.

Would be grateful for further suggestions/ideas!

Thanks

Stuart
