Strange problem with brick level backups on a cluster (cluster part is probably irelevant here).

They have been working for about a year. Had an issue about 6 months ago that produced some strange E86xx errors so I re-installed the agent and it was OK. Now when I thought I had seen every ARCserve error message in the world and things were going great, I get this:

E8604 Failed to start backup (DBNAME=dbaxch2, EC-Backup Agent Error -- (356) " Try the backup later. Another backup is running on the server." )

and the backups fails. There is no other backup running. I CAN backup the information store, but not brick. I can browse throu ght brick level backups using the agent browser (in the backup manager). I tried just backing up a few mailboxes instead of the whole brick level and this also failed. As far as i aware, nothing has changed on the Exchange server or mailboxes.

1-What is the Arcserve version and SP?
2-What is the Exchange cersion & SP?

I've had the same problem. The following article from support.ca.com solved the problem.

Title: E8604 EC=356 on Exchange Backup
Date: 12/01/99 Product: ARCserveIT 6.6x
Build: 834 SP1
Secondary Product: Exchange Agent
Secondary Product Build: 173

PROBLEM: E8604 failed to start backup EC=356 try the backup later, another backup is running on the server. Exchange 5.5 Service Pack 2, NT 4.0 Service Pack 5

RESOLUTION: Have the user go to the following key in Regedt32:

ComputerAssociates\ArcserveIT\DSAgent\CurrentVersion\Agent\DBaexch2

Reset the value "InBackupMode" from "1" to "0".
Stop and restart the backup RPC server svc and try the backup again.

Thanks this registry change made the difference for 1 succesful backup. On the second I got the error:

8602 Failed to read from database. (DBNAME=object name, EC=error message/code) "remote pipe open failed, timed out"

And the backup job hung.

I'm using ARCserve 2000 SP4 with windows 2000 server SP3
