Strange Performance problem

I'm usually pretty good at getting a report to perform better, but this one has me puzzled. Using Crystal Reports XI with dyanmic pick lists and Page N of M, but I don't think they are the issue. Using ODBC to connect to a SQL Server database. Some record selection is passed via the SQL and other parts of it require processing inside the Crystal Record Selection formula.

It's a big report with lots of columns and summary fields. Can't use "Grouping on Server" as the group is a formula based on a user parameter.

When running in Crystal Reports it takes 2-3 minutes to retrieve the data and display the first page.

Using the same parameter values on the Crystal Reports server and via the browser it takes 3 to 4 times longer to display the same information.

Thought it might be the browser, so installed a windows based viewer on a spare machine, and get slow response there as well.

So the question is what is happening inside Crystal Reports designer to make it so much faster and how can I do the same via Crystal Reports Server or a Windows based viewer?

Hi,
One idea, do a trace route and/or ping from the server running CR Server to the database and see if any bottlenecks appear.

Which Windows-based viewer did you try?

Try running the report without anyone logged in to Mas 90. Although this does not directly pertain to your question for Crystal Reports designer being faster, I have issues with some reports being horribly slow when there are other users logged in and super fast, like Crystal Reports designer speed, when there isn't anyone except me logged in. I am still looking for solutions to that(my) issue on report speed but perhaps our report running problems are somewhat related and have a common answer.
