Strange Paths when creating new Subarea

I have recently setup a new portal site on a newly installed SharePoint 2003 server. When I create a new Subarea anywhere in the site using any Template the Subarea is setup with the following path: rather than as you would expect. I've got no idea where the C10 part of the path is coming from and it seems to increment as I add more Subareas to the site C1, C2, C3 etc.

It's almost as if when I create a new Subarea SPS is creating a Subarea C[X] (where X is an incrementing number) and putting my Subarea within that.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before and does anyone have any ideas how it can be fixed? It is not so much a problem when working within the Sharepoint site but more of one when trying to save documents form Office applications into the portal as when you try to navigate to the correct Subarea you first have to guess which of the areas C1, C2, C3 etc. your Subarea might be in!!

Also FYI, I have another SPS site running on this same server and it works absolutely fine in this respect.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.
