I have a situation where the mouse appears to move all over the desktop on its own accord usually closing applications. McAfee anti virus has been updated and ran to no avail. Spy Bot, Ewido, Microsoft Anti Spyware have been run, too. any thoughts on how to determine what the virus is and how to clean or delete it? thank you.

1.) when does this happen? when you are on the internet or connected to a Network?

could be a colleague playing a prank on you with the REMOTE access...

2.) next time this happens and you are on a Network or Internet, kill the connection, ie. pull the plug from the NIC and see what happens...

3.) DL HiJackThis, and post a LOG here for ANALYSIS...

4.) DL Ewido AntiMalware ( and run a scan after updating...

My friend who owns this pc is connect 7x24 to a comcast cable high spped modem. She is runnig wndows XP for home and I thought about remote access but she does not know how to use it and she would have had to provide her ip address in order for some one to connect to it right?

she has Hijack this and the trial copy of Ewido loaded. the trial copy of ewido may have expired.

if you disconnect from the cable connection does this still happen? and i mean physically remove the cable?

There are several 'pranks' that can be downloaded from These are non-malicious bits of code that only serve to drive a user crazy. I just checked, and there is an app that does what you describe (with the exception of actually closing programs) here:

If this is the cause, moving the mouse to the very top left corner of the screen will disable the application.

Test the mouse and if it is an optical mouse test it on a solid color surface.

The answer has always been 42

@Intuity

Wrong... she does not have to give it out at all, see for yourself at ... everytime she connects to a webserver her IP gets transmitted, if infiltrated by malware, her DNS IP can get transmitted to any server out there...

she has Hijack this and the trial copy of Ewido loaded. the trial copy of ewido may have expired.
it does not matter if EWIDO is expired or not, she can still manually update it's DB and run a manual scan, the only thing that gets disabled, when the Trial period expires, is the Background checker and the Automatic Update feature...

@spizotfl - thanks for confirmation on my suggestion...

I've experienced something very similar on my PC at work - the mouse pointer will very occationally move off in some direction all on it's own.
It doesn't happen very offten and I thought it was just a problem with the inside of my mouse getting dirty.
