strange lines appearing through illustration with offset paths

In most of my files I have had the same problem with strange horizontal and vertical lines running straight through the illustration, this normally only happens in a document where I have used offset paths in one point of it. These lines seem to vanish when I zoom out, and they do not show up on any printout.
does anyone know what causes this?

Sounds like your video card is not up to the job! You can never go wrong with a good VC!

nope not the video card, I'm sure, it's doing the same on 4 machines, and they all are different spec :-(
