Strange Lag -Hard Drive?

Hi. A while ago I had some hell with drivers - blue screening and the likes. I finally reverted to the old configuration and I noticed that immeadiately after this I would click on something - an internet link, an icon, anything, and nothing would happen. I would hear the booting up whirr of the drive (not the reading 'crunk crunk' sound, it definately sounded as if something was spinning up since rest) a second or two would pass then the icon would highlight or the computer would open the link. Since then the lag is there but the whirr is less noticeable. Could it be the drive? Perhaps the RAM? Perhaps the whole damn setup.

Any help is much appreciated.

Try downloading and running drive manufacturer's diagnostic (most available from their website) as first step to ascertain drive's status.

Check Power Options in Control Panel and see if the hard drive is set to spin down after a small amount of time passes.
