we've had some issues with our DNS as of late that have been drivig me batty. At first, internet would stop working (so it seemed) but I noticed that our Outlook connection was still good and I could still message people with AIM, yahoo, etc. So, I went in and stopped/restarted the DNS service on our server and that fixed it. Great!
However, lately I've been getting the same problem and haven't been able to fix it that way. As of this moment if I try and use a domain name to get to a web site it won't work. If I use the IP address, though, it will, and again I can chat on messaging services. I tried restarting the DNS service but that didn't fix it.
Then, on my laptop, I changed the DNS servers from using DHCP and set the primary DNS server to use the same one that my web server (hosted by interland) uses. That works perfectly. So, I went in and added that DNS server IP address to the DNS list on our server here. That fixed it so that the server could browse, but didn't fix network wide...clients still cannot use domain names.
First, would this be an issue with our ISP's DNS? Ours is running fine. Second, why wouldn't adding the working DNS IP to the server fix the entire network? I thought that was the point of having backup IPs in that list. I just added it to the NICs properties. Is there somewhere else I'm suppose to add it?
Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
