I have a dual boot win2k and Redhat system so I can learn a bit about Linux and still do the things I need to until I learn another way to do 'em.

However, when I connect to the web thru kPPP, I can only access a few sites.

Even some major sites result in "unknown domain" or something.

Would the ISP be the problem? Or a configuration problem?

It's a pain to have to boot into windows to access the linux doc sites or redhat.com etc and not be able to play around while in Linux.

I can't think of any configuration settings that would restrict you from only viewing certain websites. Just out of curiosity, these sites you are able to access, did you type in the IP address? or the domain name?

Well im not sure what your problem is. But try troubleshooting it by doing a few experiments. For instance, do a 'host and see whether it would return the IP address. Then try 'ping to see of your box can actually find a route to the IP. If both of these work, then there might be something wrong with your browser. Have a go.

I tried ping and host for some major sits that i could not access.

And typing the IP addresses in the browser earned some results.

Someone suggested that the DNS settings for the Linux setup are incorrect and that it may not automatically know where the nearest Name server is like Win2k seems to

Well as i said before, doing a 'ping' and 'host' would narrow down your problems. If you do a 'host and it did not return the IP, then there is a problem with your DNS. You need to find your ISP's DNS server and put it in /etc/resolv.conf. If you did a 'ping and it didn't return any results, then there is a problem with your internet connection or your machine's internet settings.

So if you're saying that you could access those sites by typing in the IP address, then i think you need to configure the DNS settings of your web browser.

I'm having similar problems on a Redhat 7.2 box. Any Windows box on the network can get to any web address, but for some reason the Redhat box can't see certain sites. For example I can't get to but I can see with no problem.

I dug around on Redhat's site for a little bit and came across this article:

It mentions something similar to what I'm seeing, I'm going to try it out when I get a chance. Just thought I would post the info and see if it helps anyone else out...
