Strange EXCEL network traffic behavior

I am using EXCEL 2003 files from network drive . File size is about 6 MB. While Excel file is opening on local PC from file server , this action causes network traffic about 32 MB from network file server to local PC. Network traffic is observed with Ethereal. For MS Word files network traffic size corresponds to file size. Why is traffic for EXCEL files so high?
Given situation is acceptable on LAN connection , but unwished on VPN connections with 1 Mbit/sec.
