strange characters

My kid's computer, that is networked to mine, acquired 5 similar viruses (variations on Opaserv.worm), because they didn't scan like they're supposed to (the IncoculateIT autoscan scans my machine but not theirs). I got rid of them per the instructions on the InoculateIT website and everything seems fine except:

When you open a window on their machine, instead of the underscore, box and x in the upper right corner of the window for minimize, maximize and close, there is 0, 1, and o.

In windows that have boxes to check mark to select or deselect options, instead of a blank box or a checkmark, the box is colored blue with an ampersand? symbol.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Probably just residual damage. If you go to Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information.

In here under Tools there should be "File Verification utility" which checks your files and replaces them if they appear corrupt, your'll need your windows CD in the drive for this.

I also have something very close to this happening on my system. Im up for any solutions that will fix it. I do a lot of surfing, I have not seen anything odd or any attachments in emails received. My only clue is that my wife said the other night she was on WinMX and she had downloaded a Star Trek Voyager movie. When she went to play it by opening it up. A browser window opened up and took her to a bad webpage. I have ran avg antivirus, outpost firewall, the cleaner trojan program,...with no results, nothing has shown up. My systems seems to be running fine but, there are a few odd things going on.
My start button is covered in white, you cannot see the word start at all. My minimize, maximaze buttons are also messed up. I dont see numbers though. Mine are all blurred out and scrambled looking with white , black and grey colors. Also most all boxes are filled so that you cannot see if they are checked or not, if i right click on my desktop i see some sort of square on some rows on the right side and it appears to have two dots that resemble eyes. And, if you click start there are colors and jumbled color on the left side of the menu. I would hope to find out what this is and how to get rid of it. It could be anything, I may not even be a trojan or a virus.. i am just under heavy suspicion sense the WinMX incident. Any help, leads or info would be most helpful.
