When I import text from Word using the keep formatting setting (which I want), I get a box around anything that is an email address or web site. I can't seem to get rid of it. Any ideas what to do?

Word has a default auto formatting of changing all web address and e-mail addresses to active links. ID is showing these.

It can be turned off by going to the Format menu/Autoformat and clicking on Options, then Autoformat As You Type and Autofomat and unchecking Internet paths.

I don't know of any way to undo previously written work without some work. If you go to View/Toolbars/Customize in Word, you can click on Format and scroll to Reset Character Formatting and add that to your Format Toolbar.

As long as you've disabled all autoformatting as shown earlier, you can select the text that's a link and click on Reset Character Formatting. That should make the link go away. If you have a lot of these, it's a PITA, but I haven't been able to figure any other way.

You learn something new every day.

Open the ID doc with the strange boxes and then go to Window menu/Interactive/Hyperlinks. You'll get a window with all the imported links.

You can delete them or, if you double click on the link in the hyperlink pallete, you can modify its appearance.

Thank you! That is exactly what I was looking for!

That's a great tip, but the text still stays blue...I know, I know, just highlight it and change the color back to black, but that's another time consuming step.

There's gotta be a better way.

texasjoe - set up a style sheet and option + select it.

Thanks for the tips!

Will give these a try.

After posting, I discovered using the eye dropper tool is a very quick method to get rid of the blue text.

Really, the annoyance comes from Word having the links set as default on a typical installation. If you're working on a long ID doc, it is a PITA.

I'm lucky in that i do not have to maintain formatting from the Word docs I receive. I have one outfit that sends me Word docs lots of bulleted lists, which are not going to be used in the ID doc. I found cleaning those up to be a pain - just like the kinks. I just save the things as .txt and then place them.

Yes, for a lengthy document with many links, saving as txt would be the way to go.

My problem is it's usually a short document with 2 or three links.

For these, saving as a txt file would be just as time consuming as reformating the linked text.

If you have even a few links, and own Word, it's worth it to go into Word and remove the links. I think it was option + click on hyperlink box.

Thanks Lessa! That's a great tip! We usually do editing in Word so it would be very easy to ditch the links there before placing it in InD.
