Strange behaviour (maybe) in IE

I have an applet stored in a jar that normally uses the 1.4 plugin when loaded from a webpage. Recently, I have installed java 1.2 on my system, and since then IE always seems to try and load the applet using 1.2 (i think; the "Warning: Applet Window" bit is in yellow), which makes it work improperly. Using 1.4 appletviewer on the same page makes it work fine, as does accessing the same page over a network using another IE. I cannot see any options in my version of IE that would suggest why this is happening. Any ideas? (am using windows XP)
