Strange Application name in Process Info in Enterprise Manager

SQL Server 7.0 SP3 on NT4.0 SP6

When I look at the current activity/process info in Enterprise manager (or do a trace), several of our computers do not show the Application Name properly.
Most will have the application name.
Some have |||||y9(|||| or something similar with the bars.
In Profiler, the trace Application Name is ????????y(|?????

Does anyone know what this means?
Are there some settings that I need to look at? The machines are mixed windows (98, ME)
Windows 2000 clients show properly.
