Straange combobox behavior...

I have a dropdown combobox in a grid. The recordsource for the grid is a view...and the rowsource of the combobox is another view.
Problem is that the rowsource looks like
1980
1881
1982
...
but when you select 1982...you get a 3 in the comboxbox ...you get whichever item number you selected as opposed to the 1982...and of course this is what ends-up in the other view too. The rowsource view has 2 column...I've got the little boundto thingy set to column 1, which is the one that has the years?

Anyone got a clue? anyone?
