Hi All,

Perhaps this one seems elementary, but I think I have been confused on this topic.

When STP is comparing Bridges IDs and assuming the default priority is set at the default of 32768, the MAC address of the Bridge/Switch are then examined..how would one octet be compared to the other octet..for example, last octet of
.723b
vs.
.7447
(this assume that the other octets are identical)

It appears that 723b= 72311 (since "b"=11)
whereas 7447= merely 7447
so how is it that the 723b is the lower # for this comparison as I have read? I see 72311 as appearing larger than 7447. ??
I suppose I don't understand the hex comparisons as I thought I did...please help me out on this one.
Thanks,
HH

Google hex to binary conversion, you cannot just add the hex decimal value to a string. you have to first convert it to binary then back to decimal.

Hi,

I think your trying to look into it in to much detail
with your hex numbers eg 00:00:01:4f:cd:ef and 00:01:00:34:23:34 just start at the left and which number has the highest digit (123456789abcdef) is the higher number. 00:01:00:34:23:34 is clearly higher.
