Storing System Date

Does anyone know how to store the system date in a table when a record is created. I've used getdate() as the formula in a field but this won't store the date just return the current date everytime the record is called.

Sorry folks, I seem to be having a mare of a day, It would help if I used the default value instead of the formula field!!!
Apologies for being a bit thick today.

Don't use formula for that; use column default instead ("Default value" column property in EM). Then just ignore this column during INSERTs.
