Storing Japanese character set

When storing Japanese character set using MySQL, some characters come back different then how it was saved. Does any know why? When I was working with Sun/Oracle, the data was OK. After moving to Linux/MySQL, some characters did not come back correctly. I emphasize some characters. In saving my data, I would dump lots of characters onto my input form. When retrieving, some characters were garbled. Thanks.
