Hi!

I am trying to create a simple repository database using
MS Access.

I want to store a file in Access or link it.

SO when i do searching and find a right match i want to open up this file and read it?

I know the oracle let you store( or link) the file and let you open and read it.

Does Access have same functionality?

Please help me. thank you.

Hi,
In Access, you can click on the File menu item, and select "Get External Data". You have a choice of importing, or linking to the data. You can import alot of different types of data, but that isn't true with linking. You can see all of this when you pick each option, and look at the "Files of type" dialog box at the bottom of each screen.

Thank you for your reply.

But I don't see the option of "files of type"

I think when you import external data, i think it is linking to the table.

What I want to do is follow:

Table 1

Field1 Field2
smith smith_file_name == smith.txt
peter peter_file_name == peter.txt

so when i search for smith, i will get smith's file name and i want to open the smith.txt file.

Is this doable?

Could you help more?
THank you very much for your time and input.

Hi,
I believe that this is possible, but I will need to research it. It will have to be done in VBA code, since you have a input file that can have a variable name based on a field in a table. Concatenating names in VBA is very easy, and this can be used to locate and import a text file. If you are in a hurry, you can check the support.microsoft.com web site, select the appropriate Access version, such as Access 2000, then enter these keywords: "import text vba". You should change the number of topics returned to 100. Scroll through them until you find what you need.
